摘要:Dry eye disease (DED) is a common disease of the tears and ocular surface. Current treatments using eye drops have limitations such as low drug bioavailability, insufficiency in addressing the inflammatory changes and limited-time mediation. There are a number of bioactive components in healthy tears that are deficient in DED.  A drug delivery system that could deliver these components in a sustained release system over time would fill a gap in the currently available treatment modalties. In this study, we explored the possibility of using protein-conjugated silica nanoparticles (SiNPs) as a drug delivery system to treat dry eye disease. Our data suggests that protein-conjugated SiNPs have the potential to be used as an ophthalmic drug delivery system for conditions such as dry eye disease. The promising degradability of the silica matrix with the diverse biological properties of the proteins would allow the expansion of its application into injectable hydrogel, therapeutic contact lenses and ocular implants.

教授简介:

Dr. Wankei Wan is a Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at The University of Western Ontario (UWO). He was also a co-founder and Director of the Graduate Program in Biomedical Engineering at UWO from 2001 – 2007. A graduate from the University of Hong Kong, he received his PhD degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and joined UWO after an industrial research career with ESSO Canada in Ontario Canada and Exxon Research and Engineering Company in New Jersey USA. His current research interests include the design and development of nanobiomaterials for medical devices and regenerative medicine with focuses on the cardiovascular system, spine and wound; development of nanomaterials based controlled release and targeted delivery systems for therapeutics and tissue engineering; and microbial and microalgal processes for biomaterials and green materials synthesis and application.
