On July 6, 2018, the group of undergraduates from College of Life Science&Technology, HUST departed from Wuhan to Paris. With the great contribution from Professor Liu Jianmiao, a group of undergraduates, led by Xia Manman, a counselor of College of Life Science&Technology, get an opportunity to study in the famous universities and research institutes in Paris, such as the University of Paris-Saclay, and to know more about the frontier of life sciences and the elite schools in France.

To help group members understand the culture of France better and prepare for future courses, Mr. Alain Zozime (Professor from the University of Evry, France) specifically prepared a cultural tour of Paris. Everyone had a taste of the spectacularity of Versailles, the poetry of Monet’s former residence, the solemnity of the Arc de Triomphe and the magnificence of the Eiffel Tower. Although it is only a glimpse of the city, everyone was deep impressed by the valuable cultural heritage.

Professor Marjorie (Professor of the University of Paris-Saclay, France) introduced the geography and culture of France in the French culture courses. She used the timeline to allow us to move through French history and told us the story of French history, which interested everyone. The patient French teacher designed a large number of interactive practice activities to let everyone feel the charm of French language. In the past week they have seen a perceptible difference in Chinese and Western education methods: Eastern education pays more attention to the mastery of basic knowledge, and the ability of mathematical logic, while Western education pays more attention to students’ participation, practice and creation.

Besides having lectures in Evry university, everyone is fortunate enough to hear more fantastic frontier research reports. Dr. Denis (international affair administrator of Genopole) gave us a brief introduction of the origin, development and the future of Genopole.

The professor who studies in cell therapy used RF disease as a predominate example in his lecture. RF mainly causes blindness in children due to the death of RFC which can’t be regenerated. If new cells are cultured in vitro and injected beneath photoreceptor cells with a cover of gel, the disease can be cured successfully. CRISPR/Cas 9 (a gene editing technology) is an emerging technology in recent years and it has been wildly used, especially in the treatment of single-gene diseases because of its operability. A new skin treatment technique can be used to treat skin damage caused by burns, inflammation and so on, by adding specific cytokines to induce stem cells to differentiate into skin cells,  therapeutic purpose can be achieved. This undoubtedly brings good news to patients with skin damage. During the listening, the students actively asked questions. Their oral expression skills improved rapidly and also their professional knowledge increased. Those questions which hit the key points were well received by the professors.

During the French summer camp, everyone will not only experience the culture and artistic atmosphere in France, but also enhanced their professional knowledge and widen their international vision. With the support from university and college, students of LifeST-HUST will have more opportunities to be enrolled in the study in world first-class universities and show HUST students’ spirit and ability on a broader nternational stage.
